SOUTH EAST LONDON CHEF TRIO RAISE FUNDS FOR SYRIAN REFUGEE FAMILY

Three South East London chefs are uniting to support a synagogue-based charity raising funds to transform a disused caretaker’s flat into a home for a Syrian refugee family.

Pop-up favourites Fowl Mouths, award-winning Pakistani restaurant Masala Wala and Michel Roux Jnr alumnus Jonny Rothfield have joined forces for a charity feast on Sunday 14th May to support Abraham’s Tent.

The charity, by South London Liberal Synagogue, is raising £50,000 to create the home for a family fleeing violence in Syria.

“This is a very personal issue for a lot of our members,” synagogue chair Alice Alphandary, told the Observer“There is a sense that we as Jews have benefited from sanctuary in the past. For example, my father was a refugee in the 1950s. Now we want to repay that welcome to a new generation.”

The supperclub on Sunday 14th May will be held at Brockley brunch spot Noak, who have donated the space and a welcome cocktail. The event will run from 6pm until 8:30pm, with tickets available to book in advance via GrubClub (https://grubclub.com/Event/Details?eventId=15620).

The menu draws on South Asian, Middle East and Jewish influences, with samosa chaat to start from Masala Wala. Fowl Mouths will prepare the mains of kofte, chicken in a saffron sauce using  acclaimed Iraqi chef Philip Juma‘s recipe, as well as baba ganoush, halloumi with sumac and salads, all served sharing style. Pastry specialist Jonny will finish with his much-loved Chocolate Babka Bread & Butter Pudding.

Organiser Melissa Thompson, of Fowl Mouths, said:

“It’s fitting to have different cuisines represented on the day as it reflects the spirit of Abraham’s Tent – different communities uniting for the common good. We’re really excited about this. It’s a one-off and completely different to any other event out there. Plus we’ve got a brilliant calibre of chefs coming together for it.”

All profits from the evening will go to Abraham’s Tent, and further donations can be made directly through the project’s fundraising page (https://southlondon.org/tent/).
