Lansdown tennis, squash and croquet club new bar

Who are they?

The Lansdown Tennis, Squash and Croquet Club is situated just 2 miles from the centre of Bath, with 11 tennis courts some floodlit on a range of surfaces, four squash and racket ball courts and a croquet lawn, offers some enviable facilities including a lively club house.

Open from 8.30am until 11pm most days the club provides a friendly and active environment for all levels of player from complete beginners and juniors up to the national level. The club house offers food, soft drinks and hot beverages throughout the day plus alcoholic drinks at night.

The Project

With a club house that’s open almost 15 hours a day 7 days a week, there are a lot of people coming and going through the main lounge and bar area. Coaches will meet their players in the lounge and parents of the juniors will have drinks or food while waiting, plus functions that take place at the weekends.

After many years of operation since the lounge was last refurbished the club decided that their lounge area needed to be refreshed and that a new bar and back of bar would be the kick off for the rest of the refurbishment.

The Solution

George Thomas Joinery visited on several occasions to discuss the bar layout and the finishes that were achievable within the club’s budget. Discussing with both the Manager and the staff their requirements and how much storage space was required for equipment and products.

A new bar was designed, 6 metres long plus a smaller side bar 2 metres wide. Both bars have an overhead storage area and wood panelling with LED lighting to the front. The bar tops were made from Corian® for longevity and hygiene, while a special area was created for the barista machine and its requirements. Space was also allowed for fridges, wine and glasses storage with recessed LED lighting, washing machines, the beer taps and a soda tap.

During this time the club ran a temporary bar in the opposite corner of the lounge so that club members were not disadvantaged.

The Result

George Thomas removed the old bar within half a day, liaising with decorators and electricians who were on site as part of the project. The new bar was delivered the same day and fitted the next day. The new bar was used for the first time a few days later at the weekend, once it had been stocked, for a few social events.

Their comment

‘I was impressed with George Thomas Joinery from the very beginning’ said Philip Torjussen, General Manager. ‘They were very interested in just how we ran our business – we were clearly operating with numerous problems that were having an impact on how we worked. Solutions were suggested to us and the result was that we had a professional job done and we undoubtedly benefitted from the experience of their staff.

With a project of this type, there were some changes required when the work was being done. However, nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel that we were the biggest Client they had and that, no matter what, we would be pleased with the finished product. We were.

The finished product? Something that our members are very pleased with and it is so good to see engineering and craftsmanship at it’s very best’.
