PREMIUM TEQUILA BOOM CONTINUES AS DRINKERS EXPLORE MIXED DRINKS INSPIRED BY MEXICO’S MOST FAMOUS EXPORT

Supermarkets stock-up with 1800® Tequila across the UK

Consumption of quality Tequila is continuing to rise in the UK as more and more drinkers discover the versatility and deliciousness of Mexico’s national spirit in mixed drinks.  The UK’s supermarkets are expanding their tequila offering, with the world’s first premium tequila 1800® Tequila, announcing they will be listed in both Tesco and Waitrose from September 2020: https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/1800-silver-tequila/820000-735934-735935

More than 600+ UK stores across the two retailers will stock 1800® Tequila Silver priced at RRP of £30.00 for a 70cl bottle at 40% ABV.  Made from 100% Weber blue agave, the liquid is double distilled and a special selection of white tequila is blended together for complexity and character. The clean, balanced taste carries hints of sweet fruit and pepper, making it ideal for mixing in cocktails.

Oli Pergl, Tequila Educator at Proximo Spirits, said: “From refreshingly simple tequila and tonics to adding a twist on classic cocktails, 1800 Silver is really capturing the attention of drinkers here in the UK.  With quality, premium tequilas in general being much more widely available, and easy to work with when making cocktails at home, we are sure this trend will continue to grow for a good while yet.”

Waitrose reported in May this year that their tequila sales boomed by 175% since the lockdown enforcement in March, with virtual Mexican nights and cocktail hours driving the demand.

Results from the IWSR, which conducts drinks market research and analysis, show that Super Premium tequila grew at +12% and Ultra Premium +13% in the UK market between 2018 and 2019. A significant factor in the Mexican spirit’s rise in the UK is the rapid pace of premiumisation.

Partnerships, such as 1800®’s with Tesco and Waitrose, mean that spirits enthusiasts can discover that tequila is perfect for creating cocktails at home and adding a twist onto classic cocktails that would typically contain alternative spirits.  Drinks such as the Old Fashioned or Espresso Martini work extremely well with 1800.

Most drinkers are familiar with a beautifully sweet and sharp Margarita, but the quality and smooth balance of 1800®’s fruity, peppery notes opens up a whole new world of cocktail creativity, and long drinks that are easy to prepare using basic kitchen equipment.

Research shows that tequila is now being consumed in much more considered ways, such as these longer serves like the 1800® Tequila and tonic, a deliciously refreshing combination of 1800® Silver and premium tonic water served over ice and garnished with a slice of grapefruit – a natural side step into enjoying tequila for our nation of seasoned G&T fans.
