Japanese Restaurant Group Taro to Launch Sixth Site in Walthamstow

Taro Japanese restaurant group is to open a sixth London site in Walthamstow this month on Monday 20th February.

Taro is set to bring authentic Japanese food to North London’s Walthamstow. Taking over the old Manze Pie & Mash shop, the 76 sq foot site will have 90 covers.

Known for its bento, donburi, fresh sushi and sashimi, Taro also serves up a plethora of hot bowls of udon and ramen which are all cooked fresh to order. A mix of sake, Japanese whiskey and shochu, alongside wine and Japanese beers accompany.

‘Taro’ is a ‘TaishuShokudo’ 大衆食堂 in Japanese meaning ‘an everyday dining room in Japan’. The group was founded by Mr. Taro who visited London for the first time in 1979 and dreamt of making

Japanese food popular by bringing authentic Japanese cuisine and culture to the city of London.

In 1999, Mr Taro opened the first Taro restaurant on Brewer Street with a mission to offer the very best authentic Japanese food. Today he has branches in Balham, Kennington, Finchley Central and Pimlico.

Mr Taro, founder of Taro restaurants, comments on his sixth site: “Opening in Walthamstow has been on the cards for a while and taking over the old Manze Pie & Mash shop is perfect for Taro. We’re so excited to welcome in the people of Walthamstow to dine in our TaishuShokudo.”

Since taking over the Manze Pie & Mash Shop, Mr Taro has carefully restored the interior of the Grade II listed building to respect its rich history without altering the tiles and floor of the shop, whilst updating it with a new taste of Japan.

The original interior of the shop was designed by the architect Herbert Wright who introduced gilt lettering, marble counters, white-tiled décor and mirrors. The unique interior was given a listed status Grade II accolade by Heritage England in 2013.This status has prevented the interior of the main restaurant being changed and its unique interior will be preserved for people to enjoy in the future. This shop has also been awarded a blue plaque by Waltham Forest Council.

Taro is also available for takeaway and Deliveroo from all six sites.

Opening hours: Monday – Sunday, 12:00 – 22:00
