Like many groundbreaking initiatives of the past – the first computer, the first free public library in the country, the first street lighting project, Rolls-Royce was born, Graphene created – Manchester was the first city to host a large-scale event in the hotel and hospitality sector, during the Covid-19 restrictions.
The iconic Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel rallied the local council and local hospitality fraternity, HBAA, to get things organised in time to be the first hotel to host a big, independent event as the country opens up.
The event for 200 (normally the event space can host up to 800) following strict government approved guidelines was a sporting event with ex- boxer Johnny Nelson who is the longest reigning world cruiserweight champion of all time, regaling the audience of his time in the sport. The event was held in the International Suite which is one of the largest hotel event spaces in Manchester.

Des Brewer director of Legends 7 who brought the event to the hotel said, “I would like to thank the hotel for providing a Covid safe environment and all the guests for adhering to the guidelines. Together this made for an absolutely fantastic evening and shows that hospitality events can be carried out and that guests can have confidence in attending.”
Regional Director for the hotel, Steve Dunford said: “It was touch and go whether the event could take place for a while. Of course, there was a lot of risk assessment work to be done to be able to deliver this event in the way that ultimately met all Covid guidelines but also created a fabulous experience for our client.
We followed all of the guidelines to the letter and still delivered a great atmosphere and evening for all. It’s fantastic that this was the first event that wasn’t government run, as several trial events in the north have been. We had an amazing night, no incidents and have created a blueprint for the future – all here in central Manchester.”
I’m extremely proud of Team Manchester for adapting to our new ways of working and for delivering fantastic customer service. Cannot wait for next event!”.
